The Past, Present and Future of The Pine Shop

The Pine Shop is a long running family business that opened way back in 1977, therefore naturally we have a fair bit of history...

Mr Victor Edmunds started off on the Bury St Edmunds market outside Woolworths selling antique furniture, after doing well, he then decided to take the plunge and open The Pine Shop in Southgate Street with his wife Judith.  The 2 storey shop was a former bakery complete with the bakers oven in the showroom and the workshop area was situated in the old cart lodge!

After a few years of trading he started to see a demand for reproduction pine furniture, manufactured from reclaimed timber which was stained and hand waxed in a traditional way.  This furniture became hugely popular over the coming years and the Pine Shop was a hive of activity with Victor knee deep in wood shavings and polish!

Victors son Peter started working for his father after completing a cabinet making course at college, and eventually Peter then took over the business in 2000 carrying on the successful ranges of his father. Since opening in 1977 The Pine Shop has gone from strength to strength and Peters wife, Ingrid, became a business partner in the same year.

By 2002 the shop was busy enough to require some part time staff. Sam Clarke joined the team whilst studying a furniture finishing course at college. In 2003 Sam became a full time member and took on the dining furniture side of the business.  This allowed Peter the time to source some additional ranges, some manufactured locally, some imported by the container load from as far away as Indonesia!

In these current technologically advanced times it was inevitable that The Pine Shop would have to adapt to continue its success.  With such a rich and colourful past in supplying East Anglia with a traditional product and service, it was at first a leap of faith having a website built - but in 2005 that is exactly what we did!

Since the launch of our website, The Pine Shop has expanded its ranges, now stocking both traditional and contemporary solid oak furniture, an increasingly popular painted furniture range and of course we are always busy with our made to measure service!

Now in 2011 The Pine Shop is one of the most successful, well established furniture shops in Bury St Edmunds, selling Pine, Oak, Painted and Bespoke furniture.  We may look like a 'small' shop from the outside, but we deliver our quality and service in a big way!  We continue to go from strength to strength, and be proud of our past and look forward to the future!
